4 CDs, recorded 1961-1979. For some reason I have long avoided Richter except for his more unavoidable recordings ("Pictures at an Exhibition," "Appassionata"). Some of the tracks on this 4-CD set are decidedly weird (Schubert's A-Major Sonata, D. 664, sounds like ravings out of dreamland), but here is possibly the greatest recording of "The Wanderer Fantasy" and the 2nd-greatest take of Schumann's C Major Fantasy (2nd to Horowitz at Carnegie Hall). Richter played the character of Franz Liszt in a Soviet-made movie about Tchaikovsky. |
