Tupelo, Astoria
Tupelo was a bar on 34th Avenue in Astoria/Long Island City, Queens. I was no regular there, but I liked the space. I wish I had more pictures from Tupelo. These pictures were taken after the bar closed and the space was (obviously) being gutted out. Today this space is occupied by a Bravo Supermarket. When the Bravo first opened I found it hard not to remember what used to be there. The space once filled by a fireplace is now taken by organic vegetables. Where bartenders used to work, now you see cashiers. The brightly-lit, spacious supermarket could not be more different from the old Tupelo, but I think the memories inhabit the space regardless of its appearance. The owners of Tupelo opened a new bar in Astoria. The new bar is called the Queens Sparrow, and is located across the street from that summer-time tourist hole known as the Beer Garden. The Queens Sparrow used to have a web site, but it appears they let the domain name registration expire (this is why I rarely link to other sites).
