The comments on this card say that it is impossible to fit these 35 pieces into a perfect rectangle. Thus, a small "navel" exists at the top of the rectangular plastic case. This puzzle has been in my family since the early 1970s, and no one has been able to find a solution other than the one that comes with the puzzle.
