Surprised.

R.E.M. was not a huge disappointment. At times they really rocked, as a matter of fact. But I have to wonder how long Peter and Mike M. are going to be satisfied being Stipe's backup band.

Waffles, I was in L.A. five days after the 94 Nothridge quake. You are right - people were very much on edge. I was at a Bar Mitzvah reception and at one point the band was playing a song that featured a lot of base. That caused the floor to vibrate a lot and a number of people were looking at each other and asking whether it was the band or an aftershock. I think about earthquakes too. I work on the 23rd floor of an office building built in the late 50's before people around here did much thinking about the fact that there is a massive fault (the New Madrid Fault) about 160 miles from here. Last time the fault let one rip (in the late 1800's) it leveled buildings in St. Louis and shook the ground as far away as Virginia.

NPR says the death toll in Turkey is projected to hit 14,000 when all is said and done. God help those people.

damn.

i just found a whole bottle of hydrocodone in my medicine cabinet. i completely forgot i had that in there.

reminds me of that rainy day in college when i was rummaging through the storage area connected to my apartment. i found all sorts of random shit in that little room, but the only thing that really caught my attention were a pair of speakers tucked away in the corner. after dragging them out into the light for closer inspection, i got all pumped up because i recognized them as being vintage acoustic research speakers, probably from the early 70's: real wood cabinets with personality and big fat woofers that produce rich, warm sound.
anyway, the excitement didn't last long. after removing the grills i saw that they were just empty cabinets; both woofers were missing.
for whatever reason, i stuck my hand through the hole where the woofer should have been and felt around.
ended up pulling out a baggie filled with at least 1/2 to 3/4 ounces of very old, very dry, but very green kaya.
the other speaker cabinet had about an 1/8th of shrooms and 5 hits of acid.
pladow.
the acid ended up being no good. i gave the shrooms away to my girlfriends' jonesing roommate, and kept the pot for myself.
turned out to be damn good smoke for being anywhere from 4 to 20 to god knows how many years old.
i skipped all my classes to spend the afternoon smoking vintage pot, watching old movies and having sex with A., who is to this day the only woman i ever really loved.
that kind of serendipity doesn't happen very often these days, but it seemed to come in abundance back then.

sometimes i wish i was 21 again.

luckily, right now isn't one of those times.

i'm gonna pop a couple hydrocodone and go to sleep.

good luck.

well, it's nearly 3:45 am here in honolulu and i decided to get out of bed and do something since i wasn't sleeping anyway. all the usual sleeping tricks didn't seem to work this time... vicodin, wine, aspirin, milk (one at a time, in that order, throughout the night), and sleeping with my head at the foot of the bed. i'm still wide awake. and as you know, i don't even drink milk.

maybe it's the full moon, sometimes that happens.
a moon like this, i should be out camping at Makua beach or surfing.

i'm playing my favorite Nina Simone CD on my cd-rom drive, realizing that even though my new speakers really suck, Nina still sounds as sweet and sultry as ever. it's comforting.

since my boss returned home safely from Istanbul, my days at the office have been considerably busier. it's just as well, i enjoy being busy. but now I'm under a crunch to get a significant portion of my new project done before i leave for (another) vacation in mid September. i'll be working very long days for the next month. it's good though... it'll keep my mind off other things.

i'm not sure if I will consider this trip back to Michigan in September a real vacation. in some ways it will be as stressful as my job. i haven't been back in over four years. i haven't seen my mother since i visited her and her husband when they were living in Melbourne nearly two years ago. my step sister is getting married and my presence was requested. it was as good of an excuse as any to make the pilgrimage back to what is now just a vague memory of the mess of my past. i'll make sure to see what few friends are left there, as well as visit family as much as possible, but it won't be all fun and games. going back never is.

yeah. but it's good to go back now and then. it'll be a good reminder of how far i've come and how great my life has become.

it'll also be fun to get back on Detroit highways, where people really know how to drive.

It's a calculated risk: swapping a very lucrative job with decent hours for one that pays $10K less and has less favorable hours.

I'd also be swapping a career of battling pin-headed chickenshit bureaucrats every day for one that involves working outdoors, educating the public and staying out of the politics. Hmm... tough call.
